Field of Screams

The great day has finally arrived! Our ghost story, Field of Screams, which won first prize in a Writing Magazine competition is out today. So go buy your copy of Writing Magazine. Tesco’s sell it, as do most newsagents. Probably. We got ours from Tescos. Actually, we bought 15 copies, for family and friends and posted it on Facebook (we checked copyright first). We never thought we’d win, especially as we’ve entered 13 of their short story competitions but we did! Still can’t believe it. Even when the magazine arrived we expected them to tell us there’d been a mistake of epic proportions. We’ve posted two short stories off today and have another one that just needs a few tweaks before it’s ready to go. We’ve decided to up our submission mission – we promised 50 pieces of work submitted this year. We’re now up to 45. So we’re going to change our original goal to 100. As we’re already halfway through the years it’s a huge goal but we think it can be achieved. Unlike the missi0n to get 12 pieces of work published. So far we’re up to (drum roll please) ONE. Field of Screams. But we’re not in this for the wealth or the fame. We’re in for love. To quote Robert Tepper’s ‘No Easy Way Out’, “some feelings never die.”

  1. Go girlies, good on you. I’m off to Tesco in a bit to get my copy.

I would love to read some of your poetry. Any chance you could put some on here or on your facebook site? If you’re not too good I may even show you some of mine!! No on second thoughts I wouldn’t want to depress you that much. There’s not many laughs in my stuff, I make Leonard Cohen (who I hear you say) sound amusing. I would guess you haven’t heard ‘a thousand kisses deep’ by Len? There’s a reading by him on Youtube from his tour last year (he also does a different version as a song). Top stuff and a must listen for me.

    • Hey Cyrus! We’ve posted some of our poems on Facebook. There’s Why can’t it be like it is on FB? which is about how real life would be better if some things were like it is on Facebook, Target Audience, which was inspired by someone chucking an object at us from a passing car (it happens a lot), Wedded Bliss, the poem we had published by Square Magazine is on there, and one called That Friday Feeling which we wrote for a mate of ours who works in Sainsbury’s. There’s also some reworkings of My Chemical Romance songs and extracts from the short stories we’ve had published. They’re in the notes section of our page. We have actually heard of Leonard Cohen, but only Hallelujah. We’ll have to look up a thousand kisses deep. Not all our stuff is funny. Most of it’s quite dark, but we find the funny ones go down better at performances. Hope you enjoy Field of Screams. Let us know what you think – good or bad. We’d love to read some of your stuff.

  2. Well done girls! – I love the idea behind your Field of Screams short story. I look forward to reading it when I pick up a copy of ‘Writing Magazine’ later today. Good luck with the goal of 100 submitted pieces by the end of the year.

    Best of luck

    • Hey Newspoet! Thanks very much. It’s lovely to hear from people. Thanks for taking the time to drop us a comment. Hope you enjoy Field of Screams. Let us know what you think of it – good or bad. As for the 100 pieces, we have a nasty feeling we’ll probably fail but we’ll still try to match it.
